Absztrakt (kivonat)

Demographic change represents a special challenge for the whole European continent – and for Hungary as well. Its impacts on the economy, society and politics are already evident. There are many areas (settlements, micro regions, regions) in Hungary where population decline is significant – and which cannot be halted despite all efforts. Hungary has been for many centuries on the margin of the West European development’s mainstream and the land was the (semi-)periphery of Western Europe. Hopeful cases happened only on the second half of the 19th century. In the period of the so called “dualism” (the dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary) our country made big efforts to join forces to the highly developed Europe – and it was a great success for us. But after the World War I. the peace-treaty of Trianon (1920) and its consequences broke this progress for long-term. Due to the Hungarian borders’ changes, in the Great Hungarian Plain much greater areas have lost their historical centre cities than other (northern and western) parts of the broken country. During the centuries the Great Hungarian Plain had had a special way of development in the country: the Plain’s society always was relatively more developed than the economy of this place. However, this characteristic feature, the Plain’s “human capital” faded away in the last fifty years: the Plain became a permanent and extended crisis zone. Without all-social will, knowledge, innovation, workplaces and rural reforms there is no hope for join up and develop.
