Absztrakt (kivonat)

Experience shows that insufficient foundational knowledge in mathematics poses significant challenges for students entering technical higher education. This issue extends beyond mathematics courses, affecting overall academic progress. In this paper, we analyse data from undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics (GÉIK) at the University of Miskolc during the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. The analysis includes their mathematics school-leaving exam results, scores from an initial mathematical competency test, and performance in two key first-semester courses: Calculus and Descriptive Geometry. Our findings aim to highlight the correlation between students’ incoming mathematical preparedness, academic success in these courses and their overall effective progress, underlining the need for targeted interventions and preparatory programs to support students in building a stronger foundation for their studies.
