THE ERDŐDY FAMILY IN THE EARLY MODERN HISTORY OF HUNGARIAN LIBRARIES Despite the fact that we are currently experiencing a renaissance in historical research into the aristocratic families of the Kingdom of Hungary, Transylvania, and Hungary, much fundamental research still needs to be done on the role of individual families in cultural history. The artistic patronage of several generations of the Erdődy family is well known, but strangely enough, we have an incomplete picture of their role in the history of libraries and reading. The lack of sources also makes it difficult to form a complete picture. In this study, the author examines references to books in previously published sources, highlighting their novelty from the perspective of retrospective national bibliography or changes in reading tastes. The novelty of the study lies in the characterization of the reading habits of János Erdődy I. Nepomuk (1723–1789) based on the catalogues of his libraries in Bohuslavice and Witten, as well as in highlighting the fact that Erdődy, as a patron, was a particularly strong supporter of cultural life in Pozsony. Not only did he support theatre and music, but he also hosted one of the first reading circles (Lesekabinet) in his own city palace in 1788.
