THE FIVE YEARS OF ESZTERHÁZY KÁROLY UNIVERSITY (2016–2021) The five-year history of the Eszterházy Károly University was one of the most turbulent periods in the nearly 250 years of education in the Lyceum of Eger. By the time the institution stabilised, some parts of it had begun to separate. The first to leave the university was the Institute for Educational Research and Development (Budapest) in 2019, although no one in Eger shed a tear about it. In 2020, the Gyöngyös campus rejoined Gödöllő, and the Sárospatak campus was transferred to the new Tokaj-Hegyalja University in 2021. The Jászberény Campus and the vineyard and winery remained with Eger, and in 2021 the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University was established. Add to all this the difficulties caused by the Covid pandemic, which started in 2020, and we see sufficient evidence that the years between 2016 and 2021 were characterised by a series of changes, which created a lot of tension.
