REPRESENTATIONS OF SCHOOL IN FRENCH HISTORY TEXTBOOKS FROM THE THIRD REPUBLIC TO THE PRESENT DAY The images of schools found in French history textbooks are part of our heritage and often present an idealized vision of the educational institution. At the beginning of the Third Republic, educational identity was sought in ancient times, among the Romans and Carolingians. As it became more established, the Republic’s schools, while retaining these older models, forged their own identity: that of a secular, free, and compulsory school, now open to all. It was through these schools that republican principles were imposed. After the First World War, these schools were gradually idealized in textbooks. At the same time, they gained prominence in the colonial territories, where they were presented as an instrument of civilization. From the mid-1960s onward, documents depicting the schools of the Third Republic, whether in the form of texts or photographs, contributed to glorifying the work of Jules Ferry, identified with the establishment of the Republic. Meanwhile, the development of schools in the colonial territories was increasingly viewed critically within a postcolonial context. Symbolic documents of the colonial school system then became, in textbooks, the basis for developing critical thinking skills, unlike photographs portraying the idealized classroom in rural French communes of the Third Republic, such as Buigny-les-Gamaches.
