THE SETTING OF OUR STORY THE FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AT EÖTVÖS LORÁND UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1960S The student movement that took place in 1969 at the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest was for a long time an almost invisible episode in the history of both the 1960s and „1968,” and even in the history of the university itself. This study presents the setting of the story. It examines the role of higher education in the post-Stalinist period of the Soviet-style system. After the introduction of the 1968 economic reforms, the Hungarian communist leadership also considered cautious political reforms. According to the evidence, higher education would have been one of the testing grounds for this. Universities played an important role in reproducing both the elite and the sub-elite of the system, and the Faculty of Arts trained specialists in indoctrination. They wanted to impose all „democratization” on the bureaucratic system from above — the problem was that student activists took this intention seriously. They would have implemented truly democratic practices — from below. This could not be achieved even on the scale of a university faculty.
