UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN THE ESTERHÁZY PRINCELY ARCHIVE IN 1925 In the mid-1920s, the documents of the Esterházy Princely Archives were in a disorganized and difficult-to-manage state, after the estates had been significantly fragmented by the territorial changes following World War I. Historian-archivist István Hajnal (1892–1956) recognized that help was needed to process the volume of documents. At his suggestion, university students were involved in the organization of the archives and libraries at three locations, in Kismarton, Fraknó and Eszterháza. Their tasks included grouping the documents—with particular emphasis on preserving the original order of the documents—, cataloguing them, and preparing library catalogues. The students received housing, board, travel expenses and a tuition contribution. They worked throughout the two summer months, July and August, and some were even allowed to go on a trip to Vienna as a reward. Based on their submitted reports, they managed to organize and catalogue the archival material entrusted to them. Despite all this, the princely secretary Gábor Horváth expressed doubts about its effectiveness, while Hajnal considered the program useful. Overall, the experiences showed that the professional organization of historical documents requires prior training and continuous presence. And although university students were not later employed for archival work in the princely collections, Hajnal was able to implement an idea that was unique in contemporary archival practice with the support of Prince Pál Esterházy.
