WHAT IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE HEIR TO THE THRONE IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE PRINCE... KRISTÓF NICZKY’S WORK ENTITLED „STAATSKENNTNIS VON UNGARN” In 1766, Kristóf Niczky presented an 80-page book in German to Prince Albert of Saxony-Teschen, who had been appointed lieutenant-governor of the Kingdom of Hungary in December 1765. Queen Maria Theresa wanted to help her future sonin- law learn about the characteristics of the kingdom, as he knew nothing about the country entrusted to him. The manuscript discusses in 29 paragraphs the general characteristics of the kingdom, the order of succession at that time, the structure of state law, legislation, main offices and officials, the Hungarian Estates, ethnic and religious characteristics. However, based on the content of the text, it can be stated with certainty that it was not written around 1766. It refers to Francis Stephen of Lorraine as a ruler and not a deceased Emperor, and completely omits the appointment of Prince Albert as lieutenant-governor. If we compare the manuscript in the National Széchényi Library with the teaching material prepared for Joseph II during the 1750s, we can conclude that the two texts are completely identical, apart from a few spelling differences and variations in wording. On this basis, we can clearly state that Archduke Joseph’s educational material was written by Kristóf Niczky. Niczky, a legal expert and offical who was ennobled as a count in 1765, supported Prince Albert particularly in the field of Hungarian law, and then had a distinguished career. Like Prince Albert, he headed the Hungarian Royal Locotenetial Council, was Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal, and enjoyed the trust of Joseph II until his death 1787.
