THE EMPRESS’S COURT PHYSICIAN: NOTES ON GERARD VAN SWIETEN’S REFORM PROPOSAL FOR THE VIENNA MEDICAL FACULTY This study presents and contextualises the preamble and the first chapter, entitled Plan pour la facultè de la medecine, of the reform proposal for the Faculty of Medicine drafted by Gerard van Swieten—Leibarzt of Dutch origin to Maria Theresa—dated 17 January 1749. Enjoying the exceptional trust of the Empress and drawing inspiration from the model of his former mentor at Leiden, Herman Boerhaave, van Swieten initiated a comprehensive structural and pedagogical overhaul of the Medical Faculty in Vienna. His reform plan envisioned the modernisation of university curricula, the development of educational infrastructure, the subordination of professorial appointments to imperial oversight, as well as the standardisation of the examination system and professional supervision. Particular emphasis was placed on the introduction of clinical training, the institutionalisation of botany and chemistry, and the modernisation and expansion of material infrastructure, including a chemical laboratory, a botanical garden, and an anatomical collection. Furthermore, the proposal sought to regulate the training of non-academic medical practitioners. Beyond documenting the Viennese reform process, the source also illuminates the interconnectedness of science, education, and governmental authority in the eighteenth-century Habsburg Monarchy. It served not only as a record of reforms in Vienna, but also as a model for other medical faculties within the Monarchy, including the University of Nagyszombat.
