Absztrakt (kivonat)
THE HUNGARIAN INSTITUTE OF HISTORY IN ROME IN 1914–1915 (REPORTS BY SECRETARY REZSŐ VÁRI) On August 20, 1910, Vilmos Fraknói submitted a memorandum to the Hungarian Catholic episcopate regarding the establishment of the St. Stephen Institute of History and Ecclesiastical Art in Rome. However, these negotiations were unsuccessful. In early 1912, Fraknói was forced to withdraw his original offer. His valuable Roman property became the property of the Hungarian state. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) was tasked with operating the historical institute established there. The process of establishing the state-academic historical institute in the Roman villa was quick, spectacular, and successful. The institute’s secretary, classical philologist Rezső Vári, appointed on January 10, 1914, moved to Rome to prepare for the institute’s opening, scheduled for October 1, 1914. In May–June 1914, the scholarship recipients to be sent in the fall were already selected. The continuity of the research was ensured by the research-manuscripts and -lists of Monumenta Vaticana Hungariae, Fraknói’s private historical institute in Rome, from the period 1882–1905. However, due to the outbreak of World War I, the scholarship recipients did not travel abroad, and the Vatican research and the volumes of Monumenta Vaticana Hungariae were not continued. The two documents published in the paper report on what ultimately became the known reality of history instead of the original beautiful research plans to be done in the Vatican. They reveal that the Roman Hungarian Historical Institute actually began operating in Budapest. Thanks to the institute’s secretary, Rezső Vári, classical philology and Byzantine studies became the focus of its work. This direction remained significant for a full decade after the Roman Hungarian Historical Institute finally opened in Rome in 1924.
