BERCSÉNYI, KOLLONICH AND THE GALLEY SLAVES CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORY OF THE HUNGARIAN-RELATED PIOUS FOUNDATIONS OF THE CHURCH OF SAINT BENEDICT IN CONSTANTINOPLE The Archives Historiques de la Congrégation de la Mission in Paris, the central collection of the Lazarist Order (also known as Congregation of the Mission), contains a great number of Hungarian-related historical sources. Here, two charitable foundations with Hungarian-related roots can be found, which sought to improve the fate of the German and Hungarian slaves in Turkey. One was founded by Count Miklós Bercsényi, and the other was founded by Cardinal Leopold Kollonich, a Hungarian count of Croatian-Austrian origin. The two foundations were registered in the Jesuit church of St. Benedict in Constantinople, Bercsényi’s in 1725, and Kollonich’s a few decades earlier. After the dissolution of the Jesuits (1773), the activity of the foundations belonging to the church was examined, and based on the related sources, it can be established that both charitable foundations operated continuously, albeit in different ways. For these two Catholic aristocrats of Hungary, in addition to showing sympathy for their Hungarian and German compatriots suffering from galley slavery, it was important to gain visibility in one of the most important Catholic churches in the capital of the Ottoman Empire, which was also frequently visited by European diplomats.
