Absztrakt (kivonat)

THE END OF PRINCE ANTON FLORIAN VON LIECHTENSTEIN’S EMBASSY IN ROME Prince Anton Florian von Liechtenstein arrived in Rome in the autumn of 1689 as the imperial ambassador of Emperor Leopold I (1657–1705), on the occasion of the papal conclave convened after the death of Pope Innocent XI (1676–1689). He represented the imperial court at the Holy See for five years, during which time bilateral relations underwent significant changes due to the shifting balance of power in Europe. As imperial ambassador, his primary mission was to defend Habsburg interests, above all by securing papal financial aid for the imperial court and the Holy League during the Great Turkish War (1683–1699). However, tensions within the papal court intensified during the Nine Years’ War (1688–1697), especially concerning the northern Italian theatre of war. Under Pope Innocent XII (1691–1700), the papacy sought to achieve peace between France and Austria in exchange for continued anti-Ottoman financial support. Although Liechtenstein was appointed tutor (ayo) to Archduke Charles (the future Emperor Charles VI) in February 1693, his return home was delayed. This was partly due to a violent conflict and diplomatic scandal involving the Roman guards (sbirri) and members of the ambassador’s household. A greater difficulty, however, lay in the appointment of his successor, which was delayed by the rivalry among political factions within the imperial court in Vienna. In the autumn of 1694, Prince Liechtenstein finally left the Eternal City without an officially designated successor. For the following year, the emperor’s representation at the Holy See was carried out temporarily by Cardinal Johannes von Goëss and Baron François Chassignet, the embassy secretary.
