CARDINAL LEOPOLD KARL VON KOLLONITSCH AND THE ARMENIANS IN TRANSYLVANIA For a long time, the Hungarian and international research has little knowledge of the relationship between Count Leopold Karl von Kollonitsch (Hung. Kollonich Lipót) (1631–1707), Cardinal and Archbishop of Esztergom and the Armenians in Transylvania. It is well-known fact that the Cardinal himself was the most important key figure in the process called re-Catholicisation in the Hungarian Kingdom at the end of the 17th century. The pinnacle of his ecclesiastical career coincided with the settlement and church-union of the Armenians in Transylvania. At the same time, the role of Leopold Kollonich in the Romanians’ church-union in Transylvania and consolidation of the Ruthenians’ ecclesiastical union in Upper Hungary was also well-known to the scholarship. However, the research did not know his relationship with the Armenians of Transylvania, especially in relation to the Catholicism. Therefore, in this short study, this article attempts to investigate this relationship through the critical analysis of recently discovered archival sources, being kept in Hungary and foreign countries (such as in Armenia, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and the Vatican City), and a handful of secondary literature.
