Absztrakt (kivonat)
THE CITIZEN DEFENDING HIS CITY – A CONTRIBUTION TO THE MILITARIZATION OF HUNGARIAN SOCIETY The 16th and 17th centuries had a profound impact on Hungarian society. The constant Ottoman threat, the incursions of the Transylvanian princes, the dangers posed by the hajduk (irregular infantry), and protracted uprisings at the end of the period forced society to become increasingly militarized. The defensive system established against the Ottoman Empire drew its soldiers from various social estates of Hungarian society. Former serfs and nobles alike were forced to take up military service. For serfs who served in the military, participation in warfare became an opportunity for social advancement, while the nobility could retain their rights over the estates occupied by the Ottomans. A significant proportion of the population—approximately 15,000 to 30,000 families—derived their livelihood from military service. Due to the uncertain internal situation, the bourgeoisie was likewise forced to arm itself adequately to protect its property and cities. The published archival source lists the weapons owned by the citizens of Kassa (Košice). This indicates that, at the beginning of the 18th century, the majority of the citizens of Kassa possessed modern firearms of the type used by professional soldiers, rather than hunting weapons. This indicates that, in some cases, the bourgeoisie could constitute a considerable defensive force, while also demonstrating that this stratum of Hungarian society was heavily militarized.
