„MAGYAR NYELVEN FILOSOFIA” [PHILOSOPHY IN HUNGARIAN]. THE JOURNEY OF JÁNOS IMRE (1790–1832), A PRIEST FROM EGER, TO MEMBERSHIP IN THE HUNGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES The study presents the career of an almost forgotten scholar, priest and teacher from Eger, who, starting from a small village in Heves County, reached the pinnacle of science by the end of his life: in 1830, he was elected among the very first members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. János Imre’s greatest merit as a teacher and scientist is that he actively participated in the initial development of the Hungarian language vocabulary of the discipline of philosophy, as well as in launching the teaching of philosophy in Hungarian at the university level. As a philosopher and university professor, he primarily enjoyed delving into the mysteries of metaphysics and logic, and a significant part of his published books and lectures were related to these. In his will (1832), he established a foundation to demonstrate his priestly and teaching vocation, which supported the studies of two students from Eger and two students from Pest with scholarships of varying amounts. Generous financial support supported the philosophical studies of talented young Roman Catholics until the end of the 19th century.
