WORKING LIKE AN EMPEROR: CHARLES VI IN HIS PERSONAL NOTES This article examines the working habits of the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI as recorded in his diaries. The notes, which were kept almost daily over a period of more than 30 years, document the activities of Charles VI, who kept meticulous records, and provide insights into the influence of individual advisors and the decision-making processes of the Viennese court. Since the diary entries trace the daily routine in telegram-like fashion, these processes can only be grasped by looking at several years’ records. In the notes, Charles VI comes across as a hard-working monarch who was very interested in technical and administrative innovations and who travelled throughout his territories.
