THE CASE OF GRANTING GYŐR THE STATUS OF A FREE ROYAL CITY BEFORE THE COURT WAR COUNCIL AND THE COURT CHAMBER IN THE 1730S. The conflict between Győr and its landlord, the chapter, had been a part of everyday life in the city since the mid-16th century, and it was no coincidence that several royal and palatine judgments were issued in the matter. Previously unused sources show that in the 1730s, the two opposing parties used different arguments against each other before the higher authorities. Their goal was to make themselves visible and to convince the various offices of the estates, and court government bodies in Vienna. Looking at the actors involved, we see that the dignitaries of the estates (palatine), Hungarian judicial bodies, Hungarian central government bodies (Hungarian Chancellery, Hungarian Chamber) and the central government bodies of the court in Vienna (Court Chamber, Court Council of War) were also involved. Both central government bodies of the Habsburg Monarchy were actively involved in the dispute between the city of Győr and its landlord, the chapter of Győr. Previous research did not reveal that the treasury had made a serious claim to become the city’s landlord, citing the estates of the extinct Hédervári family. The decision was not easy from a political point of view either, as this right had to be enforced against a Hungarian church figure in a city that was also an important military centre and had economically strong citizens. The balancing of interests and arguments is evident in all the reports of those involved, but at the same time it brought the final agreement, the 1743 royal charter of being a free royal city, closer and made it more acceptable.
