KARL VON ZINZENDORF’S VISIT TO WARSAW IN THE SUMMER OF 1774 Karl von Zinzendorf was born in a Saxon Family, belonging to the Lutheran Church in 1739. After finishing his economic studies at the University of Jena, Karl von Zinzendorf followed the example of his half-brother and went to Vienna, and converted to the Catholic Church. He quite quickly became economic adviser in the Royal Court. According to the order of Maria Theresa, Zinzendorf had been travelling and collecting experiences concerning the economic life for 12 years in Europe. His very detailed notes, written immediately after the event are well appreciated by historians, because he could compare the development of various regions. In this article we analyse the part of his journal, written between 4–20 July 1774 during his stay in Warsaw. Zinzendorf travelled to the Polish capital asking for a letter of recommendation from the Russian ambassador, Stackelberg, in order to enter the territory of Tsarist Empire together with his friend, duc de Bragance. With the help of the Austrian ambassador, Karl von Reviczky, Zinzendorf met most of the significant Polish magnates living in the Polish capital, and the king, Stanislas August II. He enjoyed the visit and receptions in famous palaces of well-known princely families, such as Czartoryski, Radziwill, Lubomirski etc.
