CONTEMPORARY HANDWRITTEN CHRONICLES AND PRINTED PAMPHLETS ABOUT LEOPOLD I’S 1689 VISIT TO AUGSBURG AND THE CORONATION OF JOSEPH I AS KING OF ROME. In a militarily and politically tense situation—during the multi-front wars fought against the Ottoman Empire (1683–1699) and France (1688–1697)—the election and coronation of Joseph I as King of the Romans took place in Augsburg, as did the coronation of his mother, Eleonora Magdalena of Neuburg, Emperor Leopold I’s third wife, as empress. Augsburg played an active role in providing the venues for the special occasion, the coronation ceremony, and in the wide-ranging printed communication surrounding this significant imperial event. Alongside Jakob Koppmayer’s engraved prints, an illustrated report offered a multifaceted representation of the electors’ roles. In most contemporary Augsburg manuscript chronicles, the anonymous authors summarized Emperor Leopold’s personal presence—from his entry on 31 August 1689 to his departure on 3 February 1690—as a source of numerous advantages for the imperial city. Yet the manuscripts gave more detailed attention to news from the Turkish War, the dispatch of relief troops, and the celebration of victories, information about which the city’s citizens could obtain in Augsburg’s public spaces. Fewer engraved accounts were published of the 1690 Augsburg coronation as King of the Romans than of Joseph I’s 1687 coronation as King of Hungary; in the case of the Kingdom of Hungary, the heir to the throne—his person and age—played a more prominent role in symbolic political communication.
