FRENCH ORIENTATION IN THE POLISH ROYAL COURT (16TH–17TH CENTURIES) The study examines the evolution, motives, and consequences of the French political and cultural orientation in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from the late 16th through the 17th century. Beginning with the 1573 royal election after the extinction of the Jagiellonian dynasty, the Polish nobility viewed the French candidate, Henry of Valois, as the most advantageous choice due to France’s military strength, diplomatic networks, and perceived cultural affinity. Although Henry soon abandoned the Polish throne to assume the French crown, his election set a precedent for later French influence. The 17th century saw the growing presence of French culture and politics at court, especially under the influence of the queens Ludwika Maria Gonzaga and Maria Kazimiera (Marysieńka), whose entourages, language, customs, and political ambitions deeply shaped courtly life. Their efforts aimed to strengthen royal authority, foster Franco-Polish alliances, and secure dynastic succession, though these ambitions met resistance from the strongly liberty-minded Polish nobility. French diplomats, soldiers, architects, and artists played important roles in Poland, but the French orientation also provoked internal conflicts, including the Lubomirski rokosz, and contributed to political polarization. By the reign of John III Sobieski, French cultural influence persisted, yet political cooperation became more ambivalent as European power dynamics shifted. Overall, the study highlights how French influence became both a driving force of modernization and a source of tension within the unique constitutional system of the Commonwealth.
