Absztrakt (kivonat)

Cardinal Giovanni d’Aragona’s position within the College of Cardinals during the papacy of Sixtus IV (1471–1484) --- „May you be happy in the position you hold in our order, and may the Church be happy to have such an important father figure among its ranks.” With these words, Jacopo Ammannati-Piccolomini (1422–1479) greeted his colleague, Giovanni d’Aragona (1456–1485) on his appointment as cardinal in 1477, and at the same time envisioned a future for him, his dynasty, and the Church in which he could play a key role. However, many of his colleagues saw him as a servant of Neapolitan interests and were therefore distrustful of him, formulating certain prejudices against him at the beginning of his cardinalate. Who could he turn to in order to realize his family’s political ideas? How was he able to position himself within the College of Cardinals? With whom among his colleagues did he maintain truly good relations? Were there any friends among them? The College of Cardinals formed an easily definable group in the 15th century that can be analyzed from several perspectives, so examining both the individuals and their community together can yield relevant results. The aim of this study is to explore the changes in János of Aragon’s role, patterns, strategies, and opportunities within a political elite group during the papacy of Sixtus IV.
