The Flourishing of Slovak Lutheran Diakonia in the Context of the Slovak National Movement. ----- The events discussed in this study take place in Northern and Northeastern Hungary prior to the Treaty of Trianon, specifically in the regions of Szepes, Liptószentmiklós, and Turócszentmárton. The development of Slovak Lutheran diakonia began in 1922—by which time the area in question was no longer part of Northern Hungary but of Eastern Czechoslovakia. Consequently, in analyzing the effects of cultural transfer, I aim primarily to outline the causal relationships that shaped this transformation. As a point of departure, I examine the work of Juraj Tranovský and the establishment of the Slovak-speaking Lutheran community in Liptószentmiklós, followed by a discussion of the emergence of the Slovak national movement in the 19th century. Particular attention is given to the organizational roles of Ľudovít Štúr, Jozef Miloslav Hurban, and Michal Miloslav Hodža, and to the Lutheran context of their activities. Their efforts laid the foundations for the later rise of Slovak Lutheran diakonia. The study also explores the contributions of women’s associations such as Dobrodej and Živena, which played an important role from a gender history perspective. My aim is to highlight the cultural mediating role of the Lutheran Church, which not only fostered the creation of new congregations and charitable institutions, but also contributed significantly to the development of Slovak national identity.
