A Pastor with Apostolic Zeal at the Upper Miskolc Parish – The Cultural Mission of Kálmán Rétay of Hahod. ----- On 14 September 1909, Kálmán Rétay of Hahod assumed leadership of the Upper Miskolc parish (today the Parish of Saint Anne), succeeding György Zábrátzky, who had been appointed to the Lower Miskolc (Mindszent) parish. By that time, Rétay already had a notable record of cultural mission work. He had served as editor of Egyházi Műipar (Ecclesiastical Applied Arts), a journal of ecclesiastical applied arts published in Budapest, and during his tenure at the parish of Borsodszirák, he had established both a public library and a Christian Consumer Cooperative. He was also an active member of the Pázmány Association of Catholic Writers and the National Association of Catholic Circles. Already in 1909, Rétay expressed to his parishioners in Miskolc his intention to unite the city’s Catholic community through cultural engagement. As parish priest of Upper Miskolc, he went on to found the Miskolc Catholic Reading Circle, later known simply as the Catholic Circle, serving as its president. He also oversaw the construction of their community cultural center and launched the monthly journal Miskolci Katolikus Tudósító (Catholic Reporter of Miskolc). The significance of this publication is underscored by the fact that even before the First World War, it inspired similar Catholic periodicals in cities such as Kassa, Bártfa and Nagyszeben, following the model Rétay introduced in January 1912.
