The Introduction of the May Devotion in Hungary and Its Establishment in the City of Eger ----- In the first half of the 19th century, a new devotional trend emerged in Hungarian Catholic religious practice— Catholic Romanticism, which sought to revive Marian devotion in response to the rationalism of the Enlightenment. As part of this movement, the May devotion to the Virgin Mary (also known as the Litany of May) became widespread. Its aim was to honor the Virgin through daily prayers, meditations, and communal rituals during the most beautiful month of spring. Originating in Italy, the devotion spread across Central Europe by the mid-19th century, reaching Hungary as well. This study pays particular attention to the appearance of the first Hungarian-language prayer books, the role of the Institute of the English Ladies in Eger in promoting the devotion from the 1860s onward, and the process through which the litany became institutionalized and adopted in communal forms. The spread of this devotional practice served as a means of preserving religious observance and gained broad support from both church authorities and society at large.
