The Cultural Heritage of the Brothers Hospitallers in Eger ----- The Brothers Hospitallers operated in Eger from 1726 until 1950. In their well equipped hospital, they provided humane care for patients with mental illnesses in a separate facility. They also maintained a modern pharmacy and a rich library, which included numerous works on medical topics. Between 1769 and 1775, the first Hungarian medical school functioned within the premises of their establishment. The monks residing in the Eger monastery actively participated in furnishing the institution. In addition to producing panel paintings and altarpieces, the painter Lukács Huetter also decorated the window shutters of the monastic cells with painted scenes. The six window panels featured twelve scenes depicting founders of religious orders and hermits. Huetter was also responsible for the painted decoration of the refectory. The wainscoting of the dining hall is adorned with scenes from the New Testament and floral still lifes. The eight paintings on the entrance door served as visual reminders of repentance, the Last Judgment, Hell, and Heaven for the monastic community. Today, the restored window shutters and refectory paintings are housed in the Dobó István Castle Museum.
