Fragments from the Book Culture of a 17th-Century Reformed Pastor in Northeastern Hungary: The Surviving Volumes of János Szőlősi Bede’s Library. ----- János Szőlősi Bede (?–1620) was one of the lesser-known Reformed pastors of the 17th century, yet the surviving volumes from his library reveal a figure of broad intellectual horizons. His once-substantial book collection is now scattered across various Hungarian and Transylvanian libraries. While little is known about the early stages of his life, his career is well-documented from the time of his studies abroad. He studied in Wittenberg and Heidelberg, and after his peregrinatio he served as a pastor in Upper Hungary. In 1937, János Herepei described six works bearing Szőlősi Bede’s ownership inscriptions, held in Debrecen and Kolozsvár. Earlier, in 1885, Gerzson Szinyei, head librarian in Sárospatak, had listed five of his volumes in a work on the history of the Sárospatak library. In the early 2010s, research by Sándor Előd Ősz increased the number of identified books to thirteen. In recent years, further items from Szőlősi Bede’s library have come to light in additional collections across Hungary and Transylvania.
