GYÖRGY APPONYI, CARREER, OPPORTUNITIES György Apponyi is one of the few Hungarian aristocrats who was an important figure in the political life of Hungary in several periods of the 19th century. His career in the first decades of the 19th century was interrupted by the Revolution and the War of Independence, but he continued to seek opportunities for advancement. During the period of transition, he and his conservative comrades worked together to influence Hungary’s destiny, and with the advent of the Compromise, to assert their own principles, which culminated in the founding of a party in the early 1870s. Besides involvement in national politics, he also sought and seized opportunities in social and economic life which he considered compatible with his principles and which could help him in his objectives. Moreover he was the owner and columnist of two newspapers, one that stipulated the Compromise in 1867, and another that served were political ambitions as a party leader. Furthermore, his involvement in national economic policy through the construction of the railways was another opportunity for him to give voice to his ideas. Apponyi was a conservative politician, yet he adapted to the challenges of the times and tried to assert himself in several areas.
