Absztrakt (kivonat)
The History of the Southwestern United States based on the New Mexico Historical Review. The New Mexico Historical Review, established in 1926, stands as one of the oldest and most esteemed historical journals in the United States. Published quarterly by the University of New Mexico, based in Albuquerque, and sponsored by the Department of History. Structurally, the journal comprises scholarly articles focusing on the history of the American Southwest and book reviews within the broader thematic scope. This study aims, firstly, to provide a comprehensive overview and introduction to the New Mexico Historical Review, with a specific focus on drawing the attention of the Hungarian academic audience to the studies and topics featured within it. During the selection process, emphasis was placed on articles that offer valuable insights not only to those interested in the Southwest region but also to anyone seeking valuable information through their perspectives, source critiques, or problem formulations. Secondly, the rich history of the Southwest region, relatively less explored in Hungarian and European (or even North American) historiography, forms another focal point. Relying on the studies published in the review, this study offers a comprehensive but not exhaustive glimpse into the history of the Southwestern territories. Given the diversity of topics (pueblo world, Spanish expeditions, Native American history, economy of the Southwest, political attitudes of cultural groups etc.) covered in the review, focus will be on those major historical periods or phenomena that bring us closer to understanding the region’s specific development. What makes the history of the Southwest unique? How does it challenge the stereotype that the history of North America is relatively recent compared to that of the European continent? What cultural influences have shaped the Southwest, now integrated into the region? How can one trace the interactions of ethnic and cultural diversity in the region? What can one gain from it, whether examining an entirely different era or investigating geographical-historical developments?
