Absztrakt (kivonat)
Considering the importance of environmental protection for the future of mankind, the low general knowledge of the Hungarian population about it is a problem that needs urgent intervention. In this article we discuss reasons why pupils during their high school studies fail to acquire the sufficient knowledge about topics related to this important issue. In Hungarian high schools environmental protection and sustainable development are taught in few number of lessons, furthermore, this is not an individual subject, only the part of biology, geography, chemistry and other subjects of natural sciences. These subjects are not popular in the circles of students because they are difficult to learn. At teachers training colleges, the factual materials are taught in high number of lessons, therefore the problem is hidden in secondary education. The definitions and processes concerning environmental protection are the part of the syllabus but their quantity and complexity are too high for the number of lessons dedicated them. Only the most mindset pupils are able to acquire enough knowledge to choose these natural scientific subjects at their final exam. To reverse this tendency future revisions of high school syllabus should take into consideration this problem.
