In 1993 Rauscher and his coworkers made the claim that listening to Mozart’s sonata for two pianos K448 for 10 minutes improved spatial reasoning skills in normal subjects for a short period of time. Later some investigators were unable to reproduce the findings while others confirmed it, nevertheless this finding triggered research about the effect of music on brain activity and confirmed that brain areas concerned with mental imaging overlap with those involved in music processing. It is suggested, therefore, that listening to music would prime their activation, and aid their performance during different mental tasks. In my study I tested the effect of Mozart’s sonata in a verbal test, in three age-groups of students: primary, high school and college students. Students read a short text either in silence or while listening to Mozart’s sonata then we tested how correctly they can recall the text and they also filled a questionnaire about their learning habits and music preferences. Music did not improve their test results: the scores of primary school and college students were the same in both cases while high school students achieved poorer score with music than in silence. This group liked the least classical music and just started to develop their individual learning habits, probable their poor result reflected these facts. Although listening to music did not improve test scores, students generally believed in the beneficial effect of music on learning.
