Absztrakt (kivonat)
Synopsis of the Manuscript: Violent and Peaceful Resolutions of Conflicts in a Medieval Urban Network ----- The aspiring merchant families of Florence usually recorded the development of their social relations in the 13th-15th century. They recorded these information in the so-called ricordi or ricordanze, in which they also regularly updated the finances of the family. Besides the business notes, the authors also attached great importance to friends (amici) and familial interconnections among relatives. The marriages of collateral relatives, godparental relations and guest-friendships were factually documented. Keeping track of the enemies (inimici) was also important to them. The resolution of social frictions could be either peacemaking or vendetta. In my paper, I examine each chapters of Ricordi written by Luca Firidolfi da Panzano (1393-1461). The chronicler reported two vendettas, in which his own family was involved. The Gherardini brothers murdered on of the ancestors of the chronicler in 1346, and a man, called Giovanni Ciecie, attempted to murder his father in 1399. The members of the Panzani family stroke back both times for the harms. I will study further strategies of conflict resolution noted in the Ricordi, and I will compare the lessons learnt with the two vendettas. In my opinion, the members of the Panzani family realized that the social status of their enemies had been changed and fallen outside the urban network. These moments might enable the chronicler’s family to express their vengeful attitude and stabilize their social status.
