The Representation of Civic Values and the Personal Network of Social Life The Relations between Jewish-owned Fashion Stores and the Fashion Elite in the Horthy-era ----- The operation of the Jewish-owned fashion salons in the interwar period played a significant role in the economic and cultural modernization, and in the foundation of civic values. The society appreciated the professional qualifications and expertise of the Jewish owners, whose customers belonged to the upper circles of the elite, which indicates the salons’ wider acknowledgement and social embeddedness. The owners’ discrimination on religious grounds was not relevant during the first three decades of the 20th century, thus the owners did not belong to Jews based on religious convictions, but rather they had an attachment to their cultural roots. The preservation of group identity was noticeable within the studied stores through samples of marriages, business relations and inheritance, which contributed to the conservation of individual and group identity. The downtown fashion stores played a significant role in the clothing habit of the 1930s elite, and because of their social status, they shaped the everyday fashion style. The civic value, which created a new course to fashion, represented by these stores stood in stark contrast to the Christian-national ideology of the time. Salons followed the Western mode, Parisian style while the political system took a step back by strengthening the national identity and reviving the idea of the historical Hungary.
