Absztrakt (kivonat)
The ’network’ of Secession Style Town Halls ----- The paper focuses on the buildings of Hungarian town halls built around 1900s. The specific Hungarian architecture style, which aimed at strengthening the local identity in addition to serving administrative functions, emerged from the concept of the town hall of Kecskemét inaugurated in 1897, built by the plans of Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos. This type affected the architecture during the next decades. Seventeen out of the settlements registered as cities built town halls, and among them, the most significant eight were built in the Hungarian secessionist style of Lechner between 1900 and 1914. The wave of town hall-constructing was concurrent with the autonomous efforts of municipalities against the centralization of urban management. The city authorities did not meet only in these forums but they were also in close contact with each other over public construction matters. Personal networks can be approached in three ways. First, from the city management, second the city elite and third, from the architects. The locally established social capital of the architects (Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab in Marosvásárhely and Szabadka, Nándor Morbitzer in Kiskunfélegyháza, László Diczenty in Szekszárd, Henrik Kotál in Kiskunhalas, Zoltán Reiss in Magyarkanizsa) shaped the history of several constructions and affected the local construction style as well. It cannot be stated that the ‘network’ of town halls, built around 1900, would be a complete network, but the study of the formal presence of specific design features of these buildings and personal social networks indicate that this building type had been shifting towards becoming a network.
