The Importance of Networks in the Women’s Movement at the Turn of the Century. Examples of Collaboration between the Feminist Association and the Authorities ----- The method of network analysis has becoming more and more significant in the investigations of social movements. In the approach of Dianu and della Porta, for example, social organizations appear as formal or informal interactions of various networks. Individuals cooperating within organizations and the external relations of the given social organization all belong to these connections. The efficiency of given organizations substantially depends on particularities of the networks. According to the historical study of social movements, Ch. Tilly described movements as collaborations designated to target institutional structures construed as social networks. This method has limited applicability in researching earlier periods of social organizations and movements, especially, when we can only rely on written or other archived sources because the members of movements are no longer present for personal contact. Mapping the relations brings a new dimension into the history of Hungarian feminist movement, since we can get new insights on the movement’s social embeddedness and functions based on personal correspondence within these organizations, or correspondence with the authorities. This study will present and interpret sources related to the correspondence between the Feminist Association founded in Budapest at the turn of the century, in 1904, and the Capital (primarily the Mayor’s Office). Submissions and responses to it reveal a fruitful operation of structural network because feminists were able to launch several social activities or institutional initiatives with the support of the Capital.
