Enemies of the Democratic State? Network of Catholic Small Communities in the First Half of the 1950s ----- This study will describe the relationship network built around the Catholic small communities founded by György Bulányi, a Piarist monk and his acquaintances at the turn of 1940s and 1950s, on the basis of documents created by the State Security. The investigative files of the arrested leaders of the movement, which had been considered illegal by the state authority since the end of the 1940s, did not just recorded the locations and names of key participants of each community gatherings, retreats but they usually make possible to reconstruct the list of names of small community members and the structure of groups. The inner hierarchy, the relationship network of leaders and their positions within the Catholic Church can be outlined on the basis of the documents. Aside from the description of relationship networks based on the sources, I will seek answer to what groups, intellectual currents, aspirations could have been adopted from the Hungarian Catholic Church during the interwar period, and then integrated into the movement led by the Piarist monks, György Bulányi, Miklós Juhász and Jenő Török. The study of this question might be interesting because the movement drew attention to itself by its content and methodological innovation, and strong connection to the phenomena and processes of the universal Church. Thus, the movement’s ties to the tradition of pre-1945 Hungarian Church can be also described.
