Specifics of Historians’ Knowledge Transfer about Burgenland through the Debate of Jenő Házi and Otto Aull ----- This paper will discuss the possible connection between historiography and knowledge transfer through the, previously unknown, debate (conducted in several platforms) of Otto Aull, local historian from Burgenland, and Jenő Házi, archivist from Sopron. The polemics on the interpretation of Kismarton’s history appeared in books, reviews and personal correspondence. I will study what the different layers of cross-border knowledge transfer and knowledge flow tell about the history of history writing, and the history writing practice. State and language barriers formed and sometimes blocked the transfer of knowledge. The quarrel’s permanent features were: who can be called a legitimate historian and what separates the professional historian from an amateur? Jenő Házi questioned his opponent’s relevance on the topic claiming that Otto Aull had not conducted any archival research about the history of Kismarton. This reference on the lack of archival research, however, did not stand as a solid argument because Aull did not accept the role of an amateur history writer. The duel of Aull and Házi serves a good example for discussing the problems of archival knowledge and the definition of professional historian.
