Absztrakt (kivonat)
Fellowship, kinship, network. Godparents in Nagyléta of Bihar ---- My paper aims at mapping the network of godparents in Nagyléta, Bihar County, by investigating the birth certificates from church registers from 1870 to 1889. The local society of the settlement, located southeast to Debrecen, composited of diverse ethnic and Christian communities in the second half of the 19th century. Thus, the Hungarian ethnic Calvinist and the Romanian nationality Orthodox communities both lived there but in different streets, or districts. By investigating the godparenthood, I concentrated on exploring the relations of the Calvinists composited the 60% of the local society. Within the Calvinist community, I have found 13 couples with a striking amount of godparent relations; I considered them as being popular godparents. Two active pastors can be found among them during the studied period, who were both frequently requested to be godparents as part of a local tradition. The relations of Károly Szűcs and Péter Marjai were built differently; the parents of the former’s godchildren came from a more differentiated financial background, while the latter mostly baptized children coming from landowner families, and established his political career on this network. The strategy of childless or infertile families can be seen who possibly tried to expand their social network via popular godparents.
