Károly Kisfaludy in the Greek Fire ----- The study offers a genre history and theatre history based interpretation about the dramatic prologue A’ magyar szinköltészet’ apotheosisa (The Apo- theosis of Hungarian Theatrical Writing) by János Garay. Relying on coeval manuscript and printed sources, the paper deals with the history of its writing, staging and reception and also with its relationship to other pieces of the same genre. The dramatic prologue is a topical play commemorating the poet and playwright Károly Kisfaludy. The plot starts on the Rákos field in 1790 and ends in 1845 at the same place. László Kelemen who is regarded the first Hungarian actor is one of the characters, and two allegorical figures, Theatrical Writing and Nationality play major part in the action, too. Their dialogues are about nation-focused literature and about the intentions and efforts to introduce and establish drama in the genre system of Hungarian literature by supporting theatrical endeavours. Károly Kisfaludy is presented as the symbol of these endeavours, he appears at the culmination point as a statue-like mute performer lighted by Greek fire.
