Absztrakt (kivonat)

The annexed figure : A theoretical model supposed in through the drama translations of Sándor Kovásznai ----- In 1782, Kovásznai Sándor published a number of texts translated by himself from Latin, including two preclassical comedies, Plautus’ Mostellaria and Terence’s Andria. It is of great importance to note that these two were published as integral parts of a single volume instead of appearing as fully independent and isolated texts, along with a preface (or more precisely, a short introduction of theoretical nature, composed in the form of a dedication). This preface seems to aim at outlining certain characteristics that the optimal form of education as conceived by Kovásznai was supposed to have, Kovásznai formulating here a basic educational principle (school children need to be exposed to the intellectual products – both literary and scientific – of the Roman Antiquity directly, without mediation), as well as presenting a ”minimal canon” (a short list of Roman authors whose works make such a direct encounter with this knowledge possible). Terence is part of the canon, Plautus’ name however is absent form the list. Therefore, this paper makes an attempt to demonstrate through the examination of the volume’s organisational principles that the works selected by Kovásznai to be translated (in order to determine the possible reasons due to which Kovásznai could have chosen these very works), along with that of the manner in which the two texts were translated that the volume itself may have been created with the purpose of putting the aforementioned theoretical conception into practice, meanwhile also serving as an apology by means of which Kovásznai pleads for his conception and especially the canon it incorporates, in which case the comedies themselves could be considered examples, illustrations accompanying the theory Kovásznai worded in the introductory segment of the volume.
