Politics in dramaturgy: the tragedy on László Hunyadi ----- In 1784, count junior László Teleki edited three of his dramas in a special manuscript volume which titled Three Gloomy Acts of László Teleki. Of these plays, the Hunyadi-tragedy was based on György Bessenyei’s work: The tragedy of László Hunyadi (which is also mentioned in Teleki’s own manuscript.) With regards to Teleki’s work, the following question had popped up earlier: what kind of relationship is there between the works of Teleki and Bessenyei? Whether the two authors’ work of the same theme is worth considering for dramaturgical differences detected between the texts. This comparison might shed light on the question proposed by the critical edition of Bessenyei’s works: whether church related political issues played role in the reproduction of Hunyadi’s story. Is it possible to view Teleki’s work as a medium, a message, or a response to Bessenyei’s work? Is there a real dialogue or connection between the two texts or is it just a new interpretation of the works? In this study, I examine Teleki’s drama through close reading focusing on political, moral and law philosophical aspects of László Hunyadi’s story comparing it with Bessenyei’s work.
