“Dacius, Insignatus Corona” – Performances of the Piarist Secondary School in honour of count Antal Grassalkovich I. ----- In this study, we analyse school dramas performed in honour of count Antal Grassalkovich. He was born into a minor noble family and rose to eminence, by becoming one of the most well-off nobleman of the country. Besides, he also worked as an incumbent of the royal court of Vienna. Altogether, four plays were performed in his honour, all of them in the Piarist Secondary School of Nyitra and Pest. The play entitled Erkölcsnek dicsőssege, azaz Sergius Sulpitius (Pest, 1726) set the young Roman emperor as an example to the young Grassalkovich. The play Auspicata Parentatio. Sive Antigunus Filius e’ sepulchro in thronum e’ pio Demetrij patris funere in munus regium sub vectus (Nyitra, 1729) set the father-loving general, who is willing to sacrifice his own kingship for him as a model. In the play entitled Oppressae Innocentiae Victoria, seu Dacius strato hoste favente numinis ope regia Insignitvs Corona (Pest, 1732) King Dacius was the forerunner and paragon for count Grassalkovich. With Dacius innocence (Innocentia) triumphed and obtained the crown designated for him (Insignatus Corona). For Dacius, i.e., Grassalkovich, the designated crown signified his functions and his rank as a nobleman. The play entitled Leander optimam partem elegit Solitudinem prae Solio (Pest, 1735) was performed as a parable for a statesman defending Christianity and the homeland.
