Absztrakt (kivonat)

Operetta in Budapest (1875–1899) : Review on the first reactions based on the critiques of that period ---- The first operettas in Hungarian theatre history appeared in the 1850s and were in German, but later Hungarian plays were put on the stage as well. At the very beginning, the audience did not welcome the plays and the new genre, both the language and the immorality (cancan appeared in the pioneer French operetta for the first time) – were criticized. In spite of that fact, Hungarian composers kept trying to put operettas on stage, and the audience was getting fond of it, gradually. By the end of the 19th century, reviewers started to criticize Hungarian operetta, telling the plays did not prove any originality: neither the libretto, nor the music was authentic, the main pattern was either French, Austrian or English. The librettos were based on some French or German comedy; most often the plot used the intricate structures of the comedies and farces. At that time, one of the most remarkable motives was the continuous dressing of the actors (it happened quite often that men wore women clothes and vice versa, or actors played more roles and changed several times during the play). Composers did not apply or even did not want to apply any genuine tunes in the music, since the audience was used to the French and Austrian librettos, both in music and tones. Around the turn of century, everything changed: both the reviewers and the audience got bored, and yearned for some genuineness. The first pioneer operetta was Bob herceg (Prince Bob) by Jenő Huszka (a famous Hungarian composer).
