Orlando Furioso on the 17th Century Italian Opera Stage ----- The first version of Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem, published in 1516 attracted considerable interest among its lay readers and the literary men of the era. The variety of the work, the multi-threaded plot, the structure, the magical characters, the scenes, the love stories, the main character’s madness, the new genre formed at the turn of the 16th and the 17th centuries received a lot of attention from the opera librettists. In my paper, I focus on the Orlando adaptations of two librettists: the Roman Giulio Rospigliosi’s Il palazzo incantato (1642), and the Venetian Pier Paolo Bissari’s La Bradamante (1650). Through the comparative analysis of the two works I examine two Orlando-interpretations written relatively in the same period of time, but involved diverse dramaturgical approaches and stage techniques.
