Absztrakt (kivonat)

The hypothesis of our study was that the main limiting factor of population increase of the Roller in north-east Hungary is the lack of suitable natural tree cavities and therefore installing nest boxes can increase population size. The material of the study was a dataset compiled during a 13-year study period on the breeding success of the Roller population breeding in nest boxes in the Heves Plain, Borsodi Mezőség, Kesznyéten and North Jászság lowland areas. Besides population trend we studied key parameters of the nest boxes (exposure, height of fixing, nest tree species) and the microhabita of nest trees in order to define habitat preference of the Roller. We found that the provision of nest boxes increased significantly the breeding Roller population in the study area showing strong correlation with the number of nest boxes installed. However, we found loose correlation between breeding success and the species and the location of the host nest tree as well as the height of fixing while the breeding success and the exposure of the nest boxes did not correlate. Based on the results we conclude that the provision of nest boxes is an efficient tool for the conservation and artificial increase of the Roller population. We suggest installing nest boxes on solitary trees, in small wood patches and on man-made elements in open landscapes instead of closed woodland or tree plantations. The reoccupation rate of nest boxes were high so we suggest to repair or substitute deteriorated nest boxes since these can play an important role in the steady increase of the population.
